Cape Maclear, or Chembe, is a town on Malawi’s Nankumba Peninsula, at the southern end of Lake Malawi. Surrounded by forested mountains, it’s known for the sandy beaches and granite rocks of Lake Malawi National Park. The park shelters rich wildlife like antelope and baboons. Its clear waters are populated by hundreds of species of colorful cichlid fish. These are visible at dive sites such as Otter Point. Water sports like kayaking and sailing are possible offshore and around the nearby islands. A narrow channel separates the peninsula from Domwe Island, with its nature trails and beaches. Popular snorkeling spots surround the smaller Thumbi West Island and tiny Mumbo Island, home to huge underwater boulders. On the mainland, the Missionary Graves mark the burial place of missionaries who established the Livingstonia Mission here in 1875. Not far from town, Mwala Wa Mphini (“Rock of the Tribal Face Scars”) is a massive rock formation crossed with deep, naturally formed lines.
