Livingstone is a town in southwestern Zambia, a few kilometers from the Zambezi River and the border with Zimbabwe. It’s a hub for visitors to the Victoria Falls. The adjoining Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park surrounds the Zambian side of the falls. The Livingstone Museum traces local history and archaeology, and the life of the Scottish explorer, David Livingstone, after whom the town was named. Livingstone is home to old colonial buildings, markets selling sculptures, jewelry and textiles, lodges, hostels and hotels. Tour companies organize white-water rafting and kayaking trips, flights over the falls and wildlife-viewing safaris. Boat tours visit Livingstone Island and its Devil’s Pool, at the edge of the falls. There are views of the falls from the parabolic-arched Victoria Falls Bridge across the river’s gorge, and a 100m bungee jump above the water. Driving or walking safaris into the national park may encounter giraffes, elephants and rare white rhinos.
