Edmonton, capital of Canada's Alberta province, sits on the North Saskatchewan River. Its past is recreated at Fort Edmonton Park, a living history museum with an 1846 fort and streets from 1885, 1905 and 1920. The city's contemporary landmarks include the Royal Alberta Museum, with aboriginal-culture and natural-history galleries, and the futuristic-looking Art Gallery of Alberta, known for its First Nations art. The North Saskatchewan River bisects the city. Along its steep banks are many interconnected parks with launches for canoeing and kayaking, plus trails, golf courses, ski slopes and the Muttart Conservatory, a botanic garden with 4 towering glass pyramids. Across the river from downtown is the Old Strathcona district, filled with theatres, boutiques, bars and restaurants. It’s also the base of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, the most influential of the city’s numerous summer festivals. Attractions in the massive West Edmonton Mall include the Galaxyland amusement park and Sea Life Caverns aquarium.
